London Boroughs have the most mature websites in the country and have continued to improve over the last year, according to new research published today.
Better Connected 2003, an annual nationwide survey of local authority web activity, reports that eight of the 'Top 20' council websites belong to London Boroughs.
Westminister City, Camden and Wandsworth Councils are among the 10 local authorities in the UK which have achieved the top 'transactional' ranking, considered by the report as the standard to which all local authority websites should aspire to meet the requirements of eGovernment.
The report also notes a "striking" correlation between good website performance and councils that have an "Excellent" Comprehensive Performance Assessment result.
Martin Greenwood of Socitm Insight, who led the research project, commented that the results underlined that "well-developed websites are much more a test of management rather than technology".
