E-Planning First for Southwark

2 May 2003

The London Borough of Southwark has become the first authority to fully process a live planning application via the Planning Inspectorate's online Planning Portal.

The council has successfully integrated its own planning system supplied by Plantech with the Planning Portal, requiring no additional re-keying of data throughout the application process. The project, led by Peter Davies and Phil Chambers for Southwark's Regeneration Department, was accomplished in four weeks.

Liz Hirst of Plantech commented: "So far local councils have only attempted to achieve lower levels of integration with Planning Portal, but this means that council staff have to re-enter data once an alert has been sent by email."

Southwark planners will be launching a training and familiarisation programme for regular applicants and agents to encourage greater take-up of the scheme.
