|E-Marketplace Opens Doors|
19 May 2003
A new eProcurement project that could radically change how councils purchase goods and services has been launched, representing what may become the single largest local government initiative in Europe.
The Essex Marketplace is a partnership between the Improvement and Development Agency, Essex County Council and five Essex district councils - Basildon, Braintree, Maldon, Rochford and Tendring - that cuts across different levels of government and could potentially offer greater efficiency and savings through the sharing of knowledge and best practice.
The Marketplace is a web-based, centralised ordering system, allowing councils to conduct the entire procurement process online. Essex County Council claims to have saved an estimated nine per cent on stationary goods alone since trials of the system began in January. Implementation across the other participating councils will begin in the summer.
