|Innovative Approach to Deaf Community Needs|
21 May 2003
Bristol City Council is one of the first local authorities in the UK to use online sign language to provide information for dead and hard of hearing people.
Seven minutes of video clips using British Sign Language, offering advice on mental health, claiming benefits as well as help for adults and children, are available on the social services and health department pages on its website. Full transcripts of the videos are also provided.
The initiative may be extended in the future to include information on housing options for older deaf people, rights of access and human rights in respect of deaf people.
The pages can be accessed at http://www.bristol-city.gov.uk/bsl
