|Plans to Trial New Road Charging Technology|
29 May 2003
London could be piloting a satellite-based road-pricing scheme, according to the Financial Times today.
Transport for London are reported to be considering the technology along with "tag and beacon" systems following the successful introduction of congestion charging. The latter could involve vehicles carrying electronic licenses which can be read by roadside beacons or transmit data to enable credits to be deducted from a pre-paid account.
Through a satellite-based system motorists could be tracked and billed on entering a charging zone or according to their road usage.
