4 July 2003

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has made available some 50 gigabytes of data from the 2001 census covering in England and Wales for free to the public via the internet.
The census data has been broken down into over 175,000 "output areas" of between 125 and 40 household allowing interested members of the public to view socio-economic data at virtually the street-level for the first time, simply by entering a post code.
The Neighbourhood Statistics Service is available at www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk
The ONS has plans to augment the service over the coming months by adding better features including thematic maps and more census data.
