Young People Build Online Community

21 August 2003

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham is co-ordinating a project bringing young people together to produce a website for the local community.

The scheme, involving the Council's Youth Support and Development Service and Neighbourhood Management Team through Neighbourhood Renewal funding, for Abbey, will provide an online resource for the Abbey, Gascoigne and Thames wards, give information about the area and act as an open forum for residents.

During the course of the project, the young people will meet monthly to receive training in IT skills and web design training, write articles and consult with the community over the site's content.

Cllr Val Rush, Member for Gascoigne Ward and Chair of the Community Forum, said: ""The aim of the website is to build a site that the young people can own and be proud of which is accessible to all. It provides a great opportunity for them to have their say on services in their local area and to be listened to by people who can help them take action for change and to make improvements."
