The Government has announced the launch of a new network of specialist advisors charged with driving forward broadband infrastructure across the UK.
The UK Broadband Taskforce will work directly with public sector organisations, such as local councils, to increase the take-up and availability of broadband.
The Taskforce will consist of a team of DTI broadband advisors who will ensure that public sector broadband procurement has "the maximum impact on regional economic development", together with procurement advisors from the Office of the Government Commerce.
Addressing a national broadband conference, eCommerce Minister Stephen Timms said:
"Local authorities can play an important role in increasing the availability of broadband and delivering high quality public services in the UK. They are already driving forward initiatives that impact on the everyday life of the UK as a whole.
"They are focusing on key areas like education, and will be responsible for meeting the Prime Minister's goal set out yesterday of giving broadband to every school in the country. Wherever there is a school there will be broadband."
